DESCRIPTION:Aging : the promoting role of telomeres ?
Éric Gilson is PU-PH at Université Côte d’Azur and Nice University
Hospital. He heads the “Telomere, Senescence and Cancer” team at IRCAN
(Institute for Research on Cancer and Aging, Nice), a laboratory unit
devoted to aging which he founded in 2012. His research focuses on
deciphering how telomeres contribute to aging and cancer, and, through a
comparative biology lens, he investigates aging strategies across the tree
of life. His work reveals the role of telomeric chromatin in the biological
mechanisms leading to aging and cancer by identifying the protective
structure of human telomeres and showing how telomere alterations over the
lifespan contribute to normal and pathological aging, not only by inducing
senescence but also through pleiotropic effects on transcriptional
regulation, heterochromatin stability, and mitochondrial function. Eric
Gilson also plays a coordinating role in the aging‑biology community,
leading the Inserm AGEMED network, the international InterAging programme,
and the Sino‑French “Cancer, Aging and Hematology” laboratory at
Ruijin Hospital in Shanghai. He is a member of the French Academy of
Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the European Molecular
Biology Organization, and Academia Europaea and has been laureat of
prestigious prizes, including the Grand Prix Inserm and the Fondation
Allianz–Institut de France Prize.
